England Vs Australia 2nd
Test
After an excellent innings and 16 run victory
against Australia in the first Test, England where on a high and looking
to make it 2-0 at the "Home of Cricket"
The Squad
M. Trescothick
M. Atherton
G. Hick
G. Thorpe *
A. Stewart +
M.Vaughan
M. Bulbeck
G. Hamilton
A. Giles
D. Gough
A. Caddick
K. Dean
I decided to play Gavin Hamilton instead of Ashley Giles as the wicket was
pace friendly, and the 2nd day on were very cloudy. Gough was injured for
the first test but I wanted some pace so I picked him in favour of Jimmy
Ormond.
England 1st Innings
I won the toss and elected to bat first as the weather and pitch were
going to get worse as the test went on.
And it proved to be a good decision as Atherton and Trescothick
passed the 50 partnership in relatively quick time. They made 67 before
Atherton was trapped LBW by Gillespie. Hick came in next as Trescothick
passed his 50. But just one run later, Trescothick was bowled by Lee for
51. Hick looked nervous as a lot of balls flew past his bat, the clouds
started to gather and seemed to help the Aussie bowlers as Thorpe edged a
ball to the slips from the bowling of Shane Warne. Hick went soon after,
leaving me at 124-4 with Vaughan and Stewart at the crease. They made a
stand of 52 runs, with Stewart smashing the bowlers all over the park, he
hit Warne for 6 twice in his innning. but he tried one shot too many
against the blonde haired leg spinner, as he went for another big sweep
and missed it completely, bowled for 33. Hamilton joined Vaughan at the
crease, as they both made light of the Australia attack, giving especially
Glenn McGrath the treatment, they made 72 before McGrath got his own back
by having Vaughan caught in the slips for 63. Matt Bulbeck was back in the
pavilion 2 balls later, bowled by Gillespie. Hamilton soon chipped a
simple catch to the slip region off the bowling of Brett Lee, he departed
for 42. Darren Gough and Andy Caddick made 20 runs before Gough was bowled
LBW by Warne. Caddick and Dean then made an excellent partnership of 46
before the latter was caught by Warne off the bowling of Gillespie.
England made 334 all out in the first innings
Australia 1st Innings
Only 11 runs where on the board before Hayden was bowled by Dean for
4. Slater added 14 runs with Ricky Ponting before being dismissed by
Gough for 14. Steve Waugh came in and made a partnership of 23 with
Ponting before he was trapped LBW by Caddick for 12. With Mark Waugh still
injured, Damien Martyn came in next. Just a few overs later it started to
rain and over an hour was lost. This seemed to be the break the Aussies
needed as Ponting and Martyn butcherd the English pace attack. They added
a massive 182 before Martyn was caught by Trescothick in the slips off the
bowling of Caddick for 108. Ponting continued the onslaught but his
partner Gilchrist was bowled by Dean for 11. Warne made 16 from 16
balls before falling LBW to Caddick. Gillespie scored 3 before being
given out LBW off the bowling of Gough. The next ball, Gough ripped out
Lee's off stump. Gough was on a hattrick, he raced in facing Glenn
McGrath, he bowled a ball that looked like it had pitched on off stump and
hit McGrath on the pads. The shout went up but the umpire gave it not
out. McGrath was bowled three overs later by Dean. Bevan was left
not out on 146 as Australia scored 381, 47 more than England managed in
their 1st innings
England 2nd Innings
England made a good start, Atherton scoring 37 before being dismissed
by McGrath. But 4 balls later Hick was bowled for 3 by the Australian pace
man. Trescothick was then bowled by Gillespie for 91. I was then offered
the light, but refused it as Thorpe and Stewart looked in good shape
before the England wicketkeeper was bowled by Lee for 23. I then declared
with Thorpe on 74* and Vaughan on 11*, this was after losing another hour
due to rain.
Australia 2nd Innings
With only 27 overs to go I needed something spectacular, and boy did I
get it. Hayden's bad run continued as he was caught in the slips off the
bowling of Gough in the first over. In the next over, Dean trapped Slater
LBW for 0. Australia were on the rack at 0-2. Waugh and Ponting steadied
the ship and got the score to 32 before Waugh was bowled by Dean. Caddick
bowled Bevan for 7 but it was too late as play finished with Ponting on
24* and Martyn on 1*. Australia were 54-4, the match ended in a draw. |
